The Cicada Club is a magical 1920’s-30’s style nightclub where you are transported back in time to world of high glamour, dinner, dancing, cocktails and art deco. Maxwell DeMille’s club is housed at the historic James Oviatt Building, a Registered Historic Place  in downtown Los Angeles built in 1926.

The grand entrance has lots of its original features and introduces the opulence of the venue.

The staircase down to the dance floor features a highly stylised image by Tamara de Lempicka, she’s an incredibly interesting character, I’d highly recommend her biography. She was born in Poland, grew up in St Petersburg and Switzerland, moved to Paris in the 1920’s and Los Angeles in the 1930’s. She was a highly sexual creature and became notorious wherever she lived. Pictured coming down the stairs is Mo from the amazing Doo Wop band  Lil Mo and the Dynaflos with his beautiful wife.

The night takes place every Sunday and always features a live band so you can dance the night away in style. There is a dress code enforced so everyone is impeccably turned out. You can see how incredible it is, the chandelier is beautiful.

The flyer for the night is in the form of a telegram, the elevator from the ground to the mezzanine level is operated by a delightful young man, who is also an outstanding dancer.

The giant old growth oak columns surrounding the balcony feature pairs of angels holding bells and gold-leaf ceilings. The cocktail menu is a little too inviting, we opted for Singapore Slings as served at the club in 1935!

When the band has finished you can take a seat on the sofa at the mezzanine level and continue the evening, we had a lovely little sing song around the piano.
